THERAPY FAQs

  • We believe anyone and everyone could benefit from counseling services, but only if they want help and want to put in the work. Often times, we hear the catch-all solution of, “You should go to therapy!” However, some are not ready for the effort and vulnerability required in therapy.

In our opinion, the most common reasons people come to therapy are feelings of anxiousness, feeling sad & low, feeling like something is “off”, being stressed out, struggling with life purpose, or wanting to discuss a traumatic event. Whatever the reason, we are happy to discuss it and hear your story.

  • During our phone consultation, we will get to know more about you and what experiences or topics you would like to focus on during counseling sessions. Our hope is that this is a casual, low-pressure discussion about what you’re looking for in a therapist, and what you would like to have happen as a result of counseling. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions.

Please note that someone from our office will call you for a consult, not necessarily the therapist you are interested in working with.

  • During the first session, we ask lots of questions to get to know you and your unique situation that’s brought you to seek help. Together we will decide what feels most pressing or important to process and resolve, and get specific about the things you would like to focus on during our sessions.

In subsequent sessions, we will hopefully gain more insight into the issues that brought you to counseling, highlight areas that seem incongruent, and cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself, your emotions and your mind-body connection. Each session will look different, and we typically let you lead in regards to what feels most helpful to discuss that day.

  • Yes! We reserve a limited number of sliding scale spots. We believe that everyone should have access to counseling if they want it. If we can’t make it work, we have great referrals for other therapists in the area.

Additionally, our graduate interns offer services at a discounted rate.

  • Our goal is to equip and empower you to eventually not “need” counseling. This could be as little as a few months to as long as a few years.

However, success looks different for everyone. Some have the goal of “completing” counseling while others enjoy having monthly check-ins, even if they are doing quite well.

We can discuss this more once we have a direction.

  • We are an out of network practice for many insurance companies. What that means is that while we do not accept insurance, we can provide you with the information you need to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.

In compliance with the No Surprises Act that went into effect on January 1, 2022, healthcare consumers who don't have insurance or who are not using their insurance have a right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency medical items or services.

To comply with this law, Woodhaven is required to provide you with a Good Faith Estimate of the cost of services for the duration of treatment. It is difficult to determine the exact length and scope of your treatment needs, but we will attempt to give you an estimate of your financial investment in order to be as transparent as possible.

This estimate will be provided as part of your intake packet or you may reach out to our office to get an estimate for the services that you are interested in. The estimate given will be for 12 months of weekly sessions and you can adjust it for your specific needs (i.e. biweekly sessions). Please note that costs associated with treatment can also be incurred for late cancellations and no-shows in addition to direct services.

  • This depends on how many client hours you’re hoping for each semester, and how quickly you are hoping to graduate. Practicum students often commit one full day per week (6-7 hours) while internship students often commit up to two days per week (10-14 hours).

  • We require an up to date resume, a completed application, a 300-400 word explanation of what drew you to the field of counseling, and what theoretical orientations you are drawn to.

  • Woodhaven is fairly flexible in the working hours you are at the clinic, and are happy to talk in detail about your schedule. We will have a staff member on site any time an intern is working in case of an emergency.

Additionally, if you end up having down time without clients you are more than welcome to do research for sessions, or work on homework. We just ask all notes for your clients are done by the end of the work day.
